Bret Primack produced this video featuring Jimmy Heath, Paul Jeffrey and Sonny Rollins discussing the unique relationship between Sonny and John Coltrane.
Dear Bret, thank you so much for this fantastic video: certainly worthy of pride. After years of hearing Sonny and read about him (including the famous but almost indecipherable Gunther Schuller article and the recent Aidan Levy's bio), in my humble opinion, the Coltrane's statement on Sonny's art, referred by Paul Jeffrey, ("Sonny can play a tune and play it like if he wrote it") is by far the most synthetic and precise definition of his unique, fascinating and elusive style. Be safe and have a wonderful, festive, gluttonous, alcoholic and happy "DÃa de los Muertos".
