Mexico, the perpetual underdog of North America, has had its share of crap slung its way, much of it courtesy of Donald J. Trump. Remember the threats of tariffs which have returned, mass deportations, and “sending the military to take care of the cartels”? It was a four-year blitz of bombast and bullying. But here’s the thing: Mexico isn’t losing sleep over the prospect of Trump 2.0. Nope. This nation’s got its eyes firmly set on the prize—its own unstoppable rise.
The secret sauce? A mix of grit, strategy, and knowing how to play the long game. The lessons from Trump’s first presidential circus weren’t lost on Mexico. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) and now Claudia Sheinbaum has been methodically preparing for the what ifs. Trump’s antics? Been there, done that. This time, Mexico’s not ducking—it’s leaning in.
Claudia is the only world leader who has stood up to Trump. Excellente!
Trump’s presidency gave Mexico a masterclass in geopolitical jujitsu. Back then, threats of tariffs and trade wars loomed large, but Mexico flexed its muscles as the U.S.’s second-largest trade partner. Today, that leverage is stronger than ever. American manufacturers are locked into Mexico’s supply chains tighter than a snare drum. Tesla, for instance, is setting up shop south of the border. Why? Because Mexico’s skilled labor and efficient supply chains make it indispensable.
And let’s not forget, Trump’s trade saber-rattling has its limits. Going after Canada, China and Mexico at the same time? A logistical and economic nightmare for the U.S. Mexico knows this and is positioning itself as the savvy partner who’s too valuable to alienate.
Now Trump wants to annex Canada, Greenland and Panama. Notice how he hasn’t mentioned Mexico, because he knows that won’t play here.
Ah, immigration—the centerpiece of Trump’s greatest hits. The wall, the “Remain in Mexico” policy, mass deportations—it’s all coming back as Trump regains the throne. But Mexico isn’t sweating it. The López Obrador administration proved adept at managing migration crises during Trump’s first term, keeping the peace while ensuring remittances—a lifeline for millions—kept flowing. They’ve got the playbook, and it’s ready to go. Claudia’s initial statements to Trump demonstrate she’s fearless.
Trump’s rhetoric about cartels is his favorite broken record, but Mexico isn’t fazed. The government has been balancing security concerns with economic priorities for years. Officials are ready to address U.S. demands with precision-targeted operations while ensuring the broader economy stays stable. After all, even the U.S. knows it can’t afford to see Mexico destabilized.
While Trump and the U.S. grapple with their political soap opera, Mexico’s been quietly stacking wins. By 2035, some experts say, Mexico might even surpass the U.S. in key areas like innovation and economic growth.
Mexico’s median age is a youthful 28, compared to the aging, healthcare-strapped U.S. workforce. This demographic dividend is fueling a wave of tech innovation and economic vitality.
Guadalajara and Monterrey are emerging as global tech hubs, outpacing Silicon Valley in affordability and fostering an ecosystem of homegrown talent. Startups are thriving, bolstered by a tech-savvy workforce and government initiatives.
Mexico’s ambitious renewable energy goals—50% sustainable energy by 2030—aren’t just about saving the planet. They’re about selling power to their energy-hungry northern neighbor. While the U.S. bickers about pipelines, Mexico’s gearing up to dominate the green export market.
Mexico has diversified far beyond oil, investing in tech, sustainable agriculture, and education. The result? Faster GDP growth and lower national debt than the states. Mexico’s emerging as a true economic heavyweight.
While the U.S. is mired in a swamp of division and polarization, Mexico thrives on community and cohesion. It’s a cultural superpower that binds the nation through thick and thin, fostering stability that attracts foreign investors and drives domestic growth. Where the U.S. sees chaos, Mexico sees opportunity.
Trump may still loom large, but Mexico’s no longer playing the part of the bullied neighbor. It’s the scrappy upstart with a killer game plan, a nation that’s learned to thrive under pressure. The days of being a punching bag are over. Mexico’s future isn’t just bright—it’s blinding.
This is a country that knows how to roll with the punches and come out swinging. Its leaders have mastered the art of adapting, pivoting, and capitalizing on the chaos Trump stirs up. Mexico’s not just surviving—it’s rewriting the rules of the game.
So, while Trump dreams of walls and bluster, Mexico’s building bridges—to a future where it leads North America, if not the world. Trump can rant all he wants, but Mexico’s too busy thriving to care. The sun is shining south of the border, and it’s not going to stop anytime soon.
Mexico has its problems, with the Cartels at the top of the list. Let’s give Claudia a chance.
So proud of Mexico's reading the writing on the wall and preparing for the future. Why am I proud? I just admire and identify with this neighbor. I have never lived there, but have visited, studied, and always admired the people and now their ability to stand up to the U.S, Bully-in- Chief.
It would be amazing to have all of Latin America united in their policy agendas.
