Fascinating, Bret. You've been at the centre of a lot of innovation, and you have a right to be proud. My story mirrors yours, but only chronologically, from my small corner of the world. I remember well the heady times of the early days of online life, and the promise it seemed to hold.
How quickly the promise cross-faded to the commercial world that dominates today, and how little it delivers compared to what I hoped for. With the exception of substack, I've withdrawn from the social media world, and its angry muck. I'm reading novels, playing music for people with few resources or hope, and trying to make the most of what's left in the hourglass.
I wonder... how do you keep the faith? What makes you optimistic?
I enjoy listening to a lot of music, as it soothes and motivates me. And I reside in Mexico, a country that, while not without its flaws, has managed to avoid descending into the depths of distrust and narcissism that currently plague America.
What a great trip down the memory lane of your work paralleling the rise of the internet, Bret! I have been a fan of yours and the promise of the internet for the duration. The internet might not be in alignment with our hopes and dreams, but your work has, does, and will continue to be. All the best!
Thank you for your description of your journey to date. All of us appreciate your candor and I look forward to reading your next Post..
A great read! 👏 👍🏻 Thanks for sharing 🎶🎼🤗🙏

Stay on the frontier, Bret. It’s where the future happens. Cheers!
Hey Chuck, nice to see your face in the place. I've been walking on the edge for decades and see no reason to change now.
This was an amazing read. It reminded me of the entire premise of “Halt & Catch Fire”

Appreciate the kind words, Jason. We'll see what happens next.
Thanks Bret! My first computer in 1984 was the Atari st! Eventually moved to Mac! Keep on fighting for truth!
Ah, the Atari. And the Commodore 64!
