I must have discovered Emmet Cohen and friends about a year ago. Patrick Bartley impressed me hugely. All these guys are top notch! If you're looking for places where Jazz is the language of the world, this is it.
I love what Patrick says about phrasing. This is an example of an essential detail that's not really addressed in the setting of a college music education. It's the type of detail you get from your mentors, and from assimilating the masters' recordings. He also mentions poetry; creating a 'tone poem' from the words of a poem is a great exercise I use with my own students.
In addition to his mature playing and musical breadth, I appreciate Patrick's sincerity and eloquence. He seems to be a truly informed and positive human being. Someone to emulate, IMHO.
I'm please to read that you have discovered Emmet Cohen and Patrick Bartley. Have you subscribed to Emmet's Channel? He produces a performance every week and includes his touring schedule. He's probably the workingest musician in Jazz. He always has an excellent bassist and drummer and guest instrumentalists and singers. Kyle Poole is an exceptional drummer. He doesn't sound like anyone else, and that's a rarity.
Yes, Emmet is producing great content. I love the way Patrick and Emmet are utilizing YouTube to distribute their musicians and build an audience. This is a great thing for Jazz.

Yes Indeed! I've seen him with Emmet and he's a wonderful player. Looking forward to watching these when I have enough signal!
I wish Eric Dolphy was still here. Imagine!
Great writing, *SUPERB* music!
Bret, you are so absolutely right about Patrick! Where does it come from ???? His playing is nothing short of amazing!
So refreshing to hear a young musician so plugged in.
